Knesset speaker to visit Morocco on a first official visit

Knesset speaker Amir Ohana is set to visit Morocco on Wednesday. The visit comes as a response to the invitation extended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Morocco, Rachid Talbi El Alami.

Amir Ohana is the first head of the Israeli legislature to visit Morocco on an official visit. The trip is significant as it marks a groundbreaking occasion for the strengthening of the parliamentary relations between the two countries.

A statement published on Monday on the official website of the Israeli Knesset that this is “a historic official visit to the Parliament of Morocco.”


President of the House of Representatives, Amir Ohana, is scheduled to meet with his Moroccan counterpart, Rachid Talbi El Alami, as well as the chair of the Morocco-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group and Moroccan members of the House of Representatives.

The visit’s agenda further includes meetings with senior officials in the Moroccan government, as well as with leaders of the Jewish community in the kingdom.

The statement further revealed that the Knesset speaker and his Moroccan counterpart are expected to issue statements to the press following the signing of an official memorandum of understanding aimed at developing parliamentary cooperation and enhancing the relationship between Tel Aviv and Rabat.

“History is being made before our eyes, and it heralds the strengthening of the relationship between the two countries, greater closeness between the nations and expanding the circle of peace,” said Amir Ohan.

The Israeli lawmaker and member of the Knesset for the Likud is noted for being the first Knesset speaker of Moroccan origin.

Morocco began solidifying its ties with Israel in December 2020. The subsequent deals between Rabat and Tel Aviv were mediated by the administration of the ex-president Donald Trump as part of what is knowns as the Abraham Accords.

The bilateral cooperation between the two countries expands over the fields of trade, tourism, defense and cybersecurity, while approximately 200,000 Israelis traveled to Morocco.

The Moroccan government came under attack for its ties with Israel since the escalation of tension between Israelis and Palestinians. Morocco maintains its stance of the necessity to preserve the rights of Palestinians, and the “Arab-Muslim” identity of Al-Quds.
