Former French diplomat accuses Morocco of 'blackmail over the Sahara' as bilateral crisis continues

Gerard Araud, former French ambassador accredited to the United Nations, considered that “Morocco is blackmailing France on the Sahara issue, after Paris was one of its biggest supporters in the file.”

France’s former permanent representative to the UN (2014 – 2019) and ex-ambassador to the USA (2009 – 2014), accused the Kingdom of pressuring France for a clear stance on the Sahara.

“France has been alone in defending Moroccan interests at the Security Council,” the former diplomat wrote on Twitter.


In response to recent statements made by writer Tahar Benjelloun, where he blamed French President Emmanuel Macron for the deterioration in relations between Rabat and Paris, Araud commented: “It’s the usual Moroccan blackmail on Western Sahara, following the American volte-face.”

Araud refers to the Trump administration’s December 10, 2020 presidential decree supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity.

“I’ve spent nights defending Morocco at the Security Council on behalf of France, including against the United States; I don’t see how my country is concerned,” said the French politician.

However, back in 2013, Paris and several international parties opposed a US draft resolution expanding MINURSO’s mandate to include human rights monitoring in Western Sahara.

It has been four months since the decision to appoint former Moroccan ambassador to France, Mohamed Benchaaboun, as general manager of the Mohammed VI Investment Fund, and since then, the position of the Moroccan ambassador to Paris has remained vacant.
